Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
Status Updates
The Last of Us (HBO, Status: Renewed): According to HBO, the second season premiere of this post-apocalyptic series pulled in 5.3 million viewers across all platforms which is up 13% from its Season 1 premiere. That has the show off to a strong start, and not surprisingly this one has already been renewed for a third season.
Black Mirror (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This dystopian anthology series returned for its seventh season last week and pulled in 43.7 million hours of viewing across 7.1 million households, and placed at Number 4 in the Netflix Top 10. Considering it premiered on a Thursday and that only covers three days, those are pretty good numbers and I expect it to hold strong for several weeks. Co-Creator Charlie Booker has said that he hopes the show runs forever, and with numbers like these, Netflix will likely keep it around for a while.
The Wheel of Time (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): The third season of this fantasy entry hit the Nielsen streaming rankings for the week of its premiere at the Number 9 slot, pulling in an estimated 534 million minutes of viewing. That is right on par with where it was at for its second season and should have this one on track for a fourth-season renewal. I am expecting an announcement on this one at any time.
SurrealEstate (Syfy, Status: On the Bubble): This supernatural drama returned to Syfy’s schedule for its third season with almost no notice and it is languishing in the Thursday 10 PM EST timeslot. Its first two Season 3 episodes have averaged less than a 0.03 score (three one-hundredths of a ratings point) based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic and I am starting this one off at Bubble status. Fans should certainly make some noise to bring this one more attention if they want it to stick around for a fourth season.
Devil May Cry (Netflix, Status: Renewed): I was not paying much attention to this anime series because I thought it was a Japanese import, but it is actually an English-language original for the streamer. It has spent two weeks in a row in the Netflix Top 5 and that streamer has given it the greenlight for a second season.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:
I had not been including Netflix’s Devil May Cry (see above) in the current score, but I now have that factored in as well as the renewals for The Last of Us and Mayfair Witches. That brings the 2024-25 season to 28 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (51% of shows tracked) vs. 13 cancelled and ending (24%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
