Cancellation Watch: Invincible Returns to the Nielsen Rankings, Charlie Booker Wants More Black Mirror, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Invincible (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This animated superhero series returned to the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the penultimate week of its third season, placing at Number 10 with an estimated 465 million minutes of viewing. It has already been renewed for a fourth season and Robert Kirkman said in an interview that he would like for it to go seven or eight seasons to cover the comic book storylines. That may be a stretch for a streaming original these days, but I expect this one to stick around for at least a few more years.

Black Mirror (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This dystopian anthology series returns for its seventh season this week and creator Charlie Booker has said that “hopefully” it will run forever. In an interview with the BBC, Booker made the following comments:

Technology is developing in the real world very quickly. That means there are more sources of inspiration, and… the viewer is experiencing more [technological] things in their everyday life . . . We can do stories that I wouldn’t have thought of 10 years ago, and also, you don’t need to explain some of the concepts to people because they’ve got it in their phone.

Black Mirror has continued to draw strong viewership for Netflix, and since it is an anthology, each season is an event that does not necessarily require having watched prior seasons. Whether it will run forever remains to be seen, but it will almost certainly continue for at least a few more years.

Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+, Status: Renewed): This Daredevil revival did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere. But only two episodes were available for viewing that week, and competition was stiff with three shows posting over one billion minutes of viewing. The early word is that viewership for Born Again is good so far, and the show has already been renewed for a second season.

Them (Prime Video, Status: On the Bubble): It has been almost a year since the premiere of the second year of this season-long-anthology and there has been no word on it continuing. Of course, the second season announcement came as somewhat of a surprise, arriving a year and a half after the show first premiered. It is possible that this one could continue into a third season, but I am keeping it On the Bubble for now. Fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention and improve its prospects.
