The Ark Will Venture to a Third Season on Syfy

TV Line has announced that Syfy’s The Ark will be continuing to a third season. That site received notice that the show has been renewed and it has shown up in the March 6th listings from Production Weekly. The Ark has not counted as a ratings hit for the cable network, averaging below one-tenth of a ratings point across its first two seasons based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic, and I have had it On the Bubble for a while. But it has developed a notable fanbase and it apparently has international deals in place that make it more viable for the network. It is also currently one of only two active scripted shows on Syfy along with the supernatural drama SurrealEstate, and it appears to be relatively inexpensive to produce.

Series creator and showrunner Dean Devlin had the following to say about the renewal: “We’re thrilled to launch another season of The Ark! Back in space again, and the best is yet to come!” With production just starting, that would have it on track to return at some point in 2026.  Considering the fact that the show has had relatively low viewership, don’t be surprised if the third season is announced as its last at some point.

This renewal counts back to the 2023-24 season and brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score to 39 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (50% of shows tracked) vs. 35 cancelled and ending (45%) with four shows still On the Bubble. You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 78
Cancelled 26 33.3%
Ending 9 11.5% 44.9%
Renewed 39 50.0%
On the Bubble 4 5.1%
Renewal Possible 0 0.0%
Mini-Series 6

The Ark follows a colony ship that is launched from a dying Earth 100 years in the future to find a new home on Proxima b. An accident results in the loss of most of the ship’s technical crew and senior officers, and the remaining survivors must figure out how to stay alive and continue with their mission. It stars Christie Burke, Reece Ritchie, Richard Fleeshman, Stacey Michelle Read, Ryan Adams, and Pavle Jerinić.

  1. Great news. Charming low-budget scifi show. The second season was better than the first, more harmonious & self-confident, which seems like a good omen for season 3. More power to Devlin & Glassner!
