Sci Fi TV Production Report: Work Begins on Star City, Taylor Lautner: Werewolf Hunter, and Harry Potter

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.

Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings from 2/13/2025:

Star City (Apple TV+): This spin-off to For All Mankind looks to be now getting underway for production. Following is the description of the show from Deadline:

Created by Ben Nedivi, Matt Wolpert and Ronald D. Moore, Star City is another alt-history retelling of the space race – when the Soviet Union became the first nation to put a man on the moon. But this time, we explore the story from behind the Iron Curtain, showing the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humanity forward.

Rhys Ifans (House of the Dragon) has been cast in the lead role of the “Chief Designer” and Nedivi and Matt Wolpert will be the showrunners. Moore will be onboard as executive producer, and this one will likely debut at some point in 2026.

Taylor Lautner: Werewolf Hunter (TBD): This meta series was just announced and it appears that it is already moving into production. Following is the description provided by Variety:

After wrapping the final Twilight film, Taylor Lautner vanished from the spotlight. Fans speculated, tabloids theorized—but the truth is wilder than fiction. Taylor wasn’t just taking a mental health break. He was preparing for his real calling…Taylor Lautner: Werewolf Hunter. Playing himself, Taylor is drawn into a secret society of werewolf trackers who need his unique expertise. As he navigates his double life—Hollywood actor by day, supernatural warrior by night—Taylor must wrestle with the ultimate irony: fighting the very creatures that made him famous. Between saving the world, reviving his career, and falling in love, he faces the ultimate question—what happens when your biggest role becomes your greatest enemy?

Taylor Lautner will of course star in the series and it is being produced by Amazon MGM Studios. The assumption at this point is that it will stream on Prime Video, but that has not been confirmed yet.

Harry Potter (HBO): The Harry Potter TV series that no one asked for is now officially going into production according to the latest Production Weekly listing.  It will be a complete reboot offering a “faithful adaptation” that will “dive deep” into the existing books by J.K. Rowling. John Lithgow is rumored to be in final negotiations to play Professor Albus Dumbledore, though that has not been confirmed at this point. There are also other casting rumors such as Cillian Murphy (Oppenheimer) playing Lord Voldemort, but no official announcements have been made yet. Stay tuned for more updates on this series.

Other genre entries from the current listings: The Creep Tapes Season 2 (Disney+), Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 (Apple TV+), Testaments (Hulu), Vision Quest (Disney+)
