Cancellation Watch: Work Has Begun on LOTR: The Rings of Power Season 3, Avatar: The Last Airbender Holds at No. 1, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This LOTR prequel series returns for its second season this Summer and it has not received an official renewal yet, but showrunners Patrick McKay and JD Payne are already prepping for the third season. They have begun to work on the story and production could begin soon once they get the official greenlight from Amazon. The first season was one of Prime Video’s most-watched originals, and Amazon made a five-season commitment to get the rights to LOTR, so I expect this one to stick around for several more years.

Avatar The Last Airbender (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This live-action reboot of the beloved Anime held at Number 1 in the Netflix charts for a second week in a row. Viewership dipped just slightly from the premiere week, with 144 million hours watched across just under 20 million households, but it remains a strong performer for the streamer. Expect this one to continue to a second season and possibly more based on the current viewership numbers.

The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live (AMC, Status: Mini-Series): The ratings for this TWD spin-off slipped some in its second week as it posted a 0.16 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 880 million total viewers. The premiere from the prior week marked a six-year high in viewership for a debut on AMC, and the show has also set records with streaming views on AMC+. This one has been pegged as a mini-series, but it is possible that it could return for a second season and/or a crossover with the other TWD spin-offs.
