Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings from April 10th:
3 Body Problem Seasons 2 & 3 (Netflix): The second season of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem is showing up again in the Production Weekly listings, and news has come out that the second and third seasons will be filmed back-to-back. The streamer is doing the same with its live-action adaptation of Avatar: The Last Airbender and this will cut down on the hiatus between seasons. However, it still means that there will be a wait for the second year to premiere seeing as it likely will not be ready until early 2026. But that will at least result in less time for the third season to arrive which will act as the conclusion to the series.
Magic: The Gathering (Netflix): This animated series is back on the Production Weekly list and finally appears to be moving forward. It was originally given the greenlight back in 2019, but then seemed to disappear into Development Hell. In September 2024, it was announced that Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys, Star Trek: Picard) was stepping in to take over the project and supposedly it was going into production then. Apparently, there were delays with that, but now it is on the production list and should hopefully be on target for a late 2025 or early 2026 premiere.
The Last of Us Season 3 (HBO): The third season renewal for this series was announced yesterday and it is showing up on the most recent Production Weekly list. With the second season set to premiere on Sunday, this should cut down on the hiatus with the third year potentially arriving as soon as early 2026.
Other genre entries from the listings for April 10th: Crystal Lake (Peacock), Interview with the Vampire Season 3 (AMC), The Testaments (Hulu)
