Sci Fi TV Highlights: Premieres for Black Mirror S7, The Last of Us S2, The Handmaid’s Tale S6, and More

Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.

Sci Fi TV Premieres This Week:

The Black Mirror (Netflix): According to Charlie Booker the Season 7 episodes are “back to basics in many ways . . . They’re all sci-fi stories, but there’s definitely some horrifying things that occur, but maybe not in an overt horror movie way. There’s definitely some disturbing content in it.” All episodes will be available for viewing on Thursday.

The Last of Us (HBO): Season 2 picks up five years after the events of the first season, exploring the aftermath of Joel’s actions and the strained relationship between him and Ellie, as they face a new world and a dangerous path ahead. Premieres Sunday at 9 PM EST.

The Handmaid’s Tale (Hulu): This final chapter of June’s journey highlights the importance of hope, courage, solidarity, and resilience in the pursuit of justice and freedom. The first three episodes of Season 6 will be available for streaming on Tuesday.

Doctor Who (Disney+): Ncuti Gatwa returns as the Fifteenth Doctor for an all-new set of adventures. The first episode of his second season will be available for streaming on Saturday.

Schedule Notes:

After several weeks of no sci fi TV premieres, we have four big ones all in one week. In addition, Hulu’s Paradise starts an encore run on ABC on Monday at 10 PM EST (you can read more about that one at this link). The premieres will slow down again after this week, though, with only one more currently on the schedule this month. Below are the full listings for the current week, and you can see all of the premieres for April and beyond at this link. The two-week view of the schedule is available here.

Sci Fi TV News of Note:

Word is that The Defenders will return in the Daredevil: Born Again series which would bring back Jessica Jones, Luke Cage, and Iron Fist. Krysten Ritter and Mike Colter had previously expressed an interest in returning to the characters, but Finn Jones had not been well-received as Iron Fist and there were talks he would be replaced if the character was brought back. But Jones does want to reprise the role saying:

I’m very aware of the critiques of the character and my role in it. My response to that is ‘give me a f*cking chance, man. I’m here and I’m ready, and I wanna prove people wrong.

There has been no official confirmation of his status at this point nor of the return of Ritter and Colter, but I expect more news as the second season of Daredevil: Born Again ramps up.

In production news, filming for Resident Alien Season 4 has been completed according to series star Alan Tudyk which should have it on track to premiere later in 2025.  Filming has also begun on The Testaments (the sequel series to The Handmaid’s Tale) and that one will likely premiere early 2026. In addition, work has begun on Season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy and Season 3 of Severance, and you can read more about those in our latest Sci Fi TV Production Report column.

In scheduling announcements, the long-awaited second season of Peacemaker finally has a release date of August 21st.
