Sci Fi TV Production Report: Work Begins on Starfleet Academy Season 2 and Severance Season 3

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.

Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings from March 27th and April 3d:

Starfleet Academy Season 2 (Paramount+): A premiere date for the first season of this new Star Trek series has not been announced yet, but work has already begun on the previously announced second season. And that is a good thing because it will reduce the hiatus between seasons which has been dragging out for one-and-a-half to two years or more for some shows (see below). Following is the description of the series provided by Deadline:

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows the adventures of a new class of Starfleet cadets as they come of age in one of the most legendary places in the galaxy. Under the watchful and demanding eyes of their instructors, they will discover what it takes to become Starfleet officers as they navigate blossoming friendships, explosive rivalries, first loves and a new enemy that threatens both the Academy and the Federation itself.

Holly Hunter (The Incredibles) has been cast as the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy, and the cast of cadets will include Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner. Voyager‘s Robert Picardo will be reprising his role as the Emergency Medical Hologram, and Paul Giamatti and Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) will be stopping by in recurring roles.

Severance Season 3 (Apple TV+): The third season renewal for this show was announced two weeks ago and it showed up on the March 27th Production Weekly list. That should certainly mean that there is much less of a wait between seasons (there were three years between the first and second seasons due in part to the strikes), and this one could return as early as the beginning of 2026.

Other genre entries from the listings March 27th and April 3rd: Buffy the Vampire Slayer Reboot (Hulu), Crystal Lake (Peacock), School Spirits Season 3 (Paramount+), The Testaments (Hulu)
