Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services.
The Roku Channel is a live, ad-supported streaming service that has a wide selection of TV shows and movies. Like Tubi TV, it hearkens back to the early days of Hulu when that was a free service and offered a pretty expansive catalog. The Roku Channel has very little in the way of original programming, but it does have a notable selection of past sci fi and fantasy TV shows and movies. It also has over 350 live-streaming channels including many of the ones you can get with a digital antenna along with a lot of the Pluto TV channels. In addition, it has several Warner Bros. channels (which I believe are exclusive) including WB TV Watchlist which has Westworld, Raised by Wolves, and The Nevers. You have to catch the shows when they are streaming live, but I believe that is the only place they are currently available. The ads on The Roku Channel are not bad, similar to Tubi TV, and they don’t offer a paid option to go ad-free at this point. But there is plenty of interest to sci fi fans on this service, and it is certainly worth checking out. Following is a list of some of the highlights among the genre entries on the channel.
Westworld (WB TV Watchlist – 4 Seasons Totaling 36 Episodes): This a sci-fi thriller is set in a futuristic amusement park where highly advanced android hosts cater to wealthy guests’ wildest desires, but things spiral out of control when the hosts gain self-awareness. As the lines between reality and artificial intelligence blur, the park becomes a battleground for control, freedom, and survival.
Babylon 5 (On Demand – 5 Seasons Totaling 110 Episodes): In a distant future, a space station serves as a diplomatic hub where humans and alien civilizations struggle to maintain peace, but growing tensions threaten to ignite interstellar war. As the children grow, questions arise about the true nature of their protectors.
The Outer Limits (On Demand – 9 Seasons Totaling 201 Episodes): An anthology series that explores the boundaries of science fiction, horror, and mystery, where each episode delves into unsettling tales of futuristic technology, alien encounters, and the unknown. “There is nothing wrong with your television set… we are controlling transmission.” Roku has both the original series and the 1990s revival available for streaming
The Nevers (WB TV Watchlist – 1 Season Totaling 12 Episodes): In Victorian London, a group of women known as the “Touched” develop extraordinary abilities after a mysterious event, making them targets of fear and intrigue.
