Severance Has Been Renewed for a Third Season by Apple TV+

Coming as no surprise, the corporate dystopia series Severance has been renewed for Season 3 by Apple TV+. That show returned for its second season in January and it has spent six weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings so far, becoming the streamer’s most-watched original series. It just released its finale on Friday, and I assumed that the announcement would be coming out around that time. The long, three-year wait between its first and second season–in part due to the strikes–actually worked in this show’s favor as it built up an audience through word of mouth and also built up plenty of anticipation for the arrival of the second season. The hiatus should not be nearly as long before the arrival of the third year, though, because work had already begun on that and executive producer Ben Stiller has said on social media “Season 3 of Severance available on request”.

Series creator Dan Erickson has told Variety that “a lot is mapped out” for the upcoming third season and “there is an endpoint for the series as a whole, and we know more or less how many seasons we are going to do”. He did not indicate how many seasons they are targeting at this point, but I would guess somewhere in the range of five or six as that appears to be capping-off point of some of the more popular streaming originals.

This announcement brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2024-25 season to 25 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (51% of shows tracked) vs. 13 cancelled and ending (27%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.

Severance follows the employees at Lumon Industries who undergo a surgical procedure to separate their work memories from their personal lives. Mark Scout begins to unravel a sinister conspiracy as he questions the true purpose of the company and the cost of severing one’s identity. It stars Adam Scott, Zach Cherry, Britt Lower, Tramell Tillman, Jen Tullock, Dichen Lachman, and John Turturro.
