Coming as no surprise, Paramount+ has given a third-season renewal to its supernatural drama School Spirits. The second season of that show wrapped up on March 6th and an entry for the third year showed up in the Production Weekly listings for the week of January 16th suggesting that production was ramping up. With this announcement, the streamer has made the renewal official.
The series premiered on Paramount+ in March 2023 with little in the way of promotion, and it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at that point. But the streamer apparently licensed the show to Netflix and it premiered for an encore run on the latter service in December 2023 resulting in a four-week run in the charts. The second season, which premiered at the end of January 2025, did not place in the charts with its run on Paramount+, but it averaged 3.9 million viewers in 28 days which was up 94% from the first season run on that service according to Paramount.
This licensing deal across streamers is not something that we have seen a lot of, but it could become a way for streaming originals to find more of an audience and stick around for a while. I would typically be suggesting that the third season of the show could be its last at this point because successful streaming originals typically cap out at three to four seasons, but with this deal in place, perhaps School Spirits could stick around longer. And with production of the third season kicking off in January, the show could return as soon as late 2025, though early 2026 is more likely.
