Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings from March 6th and March 13th:
3 Body Problem Season 3 (Netflix): This series, based on the book trilogy written by Liu Cixin, premiered in March of 2024, and now, one year later, the second season is finally moving into production according to the latest listings from Production Weekly. That means that it will almost certainly not premiere until 2026 because of the scope of the production (which will include intergalactic warfare), and that will result in a delay of close to two years if not more between seasons. This one has already been renewed through its third season, and maybe they will get a jump on that to cut down the gap between the second and third years.
It: Welcome to Derry (HBO): This prequel to the It movies was announced in 2022, and production is finally starting on the show. The nine-episode first season will take place in 1962, leading up to the events of the first movie. Executive producers Andy and Barbara Muschietti had the following to say about the direction of the series:
It’s a story that’s based on the interludes of the book. The interludes are basically chapters that reflect Mike Hanlon’s research. They’re fragments of his research. For 27 years, it’s the guy trying to figure out what it is, what did it, who did it, who saw it, and all that stuff. So they talk about catastrophic events from the past, like the fire in the Black Spot…. the massacre of the Bradley Gang, a gang of bank robbers in the ’30s… and the explosion of the Kitchener Ironworks. Every time [Pennywise] comes out of hibernation, there is a catastrophic event that happens at the beginning of that cycle.
Three seasons are planned with the second taking place in 1935 and the third in 1908, but anything beyond the first season will depend upon the ratings. The show is currently set to premiere in early 2026.
Sugar Season 2 (Apple TV+): The second season of this mystery series with a twist is now showing up in the Production Weekly listings, and that could have it on track to premiere by the end of 2025, but more likely it will arrive in early 2026. According to Colin Farrell, “in the second season, we get to really get into where [Sugar] comes from, what his mission is here”, so the series will be taking a deeper dive into the main character when it returns.
The Witcher Season 5 (Netflix): A premiere date has not been announced for the fourth season of this show, but it is expected to arrive around Summer 2025. And Netflix is apparently trying to get a jump on the fifth and final year to cut down on the gap between seasons.
Other genre entries from the listings March 6th and 13th: Ahsoka Season 2 (Disney+), Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2 (Netflix), Crystal Lake (Peacock), Harry Potter (HBO), Testament (Hulu), The Witcher Season 5 (Netflix)
