Cancellation Watch: Daredevil Born Again Starts Strong, Halo Finds a New Life on Netflix, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+, Status: Renewed): Coming as no surprise, Daredevil: Born Again got off to a strong start in its premiere week, pulling in 7.5 million views across its first five days of streaming according to Disney. Daredevil was a hit on Netflix when it premiered ten years ago in 2015, and the Mouse House should have been quicker to revive the property when it was first cancelled after three seasons. Now that they finally got around to that (after the Netflix rights expired and some questionable choices on the part of Disney execs), the show is a hit again. This one has already been renewed for a second season, and I expect it could stick around for a while.

Halo (Paramount+/Netflix, Status: Cancelled): The first season of this video-game-based show is now available on Netflix and it made it into that streamer’s Top 10 last week, placing at the Number 4 slot with 32 million hours watched across 4.2 million households. This one was cancelled by Paramount+ after two seasons, and apparently Netflix has some interest in reviving the franchise. Only the first season is available there at this point, and only in a few regions across the globe. But if it does continue to perform well for the streamer, perhaps the second season will be added and maybe a third season will get a greenlight as well. Fans should certainly make some noise on the social networks if they do want more seasons of this show on Netflix.

Mayfair Witches (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): This show wrapped up its second season last week, and there has been no word on a third year yet. Its numbers are down notably in its sophomore season, in part because it airs on a highly competitive night. I have been leaning toward moving this one to Bubble status, but AMC has been all-in on its Immortal Universe, so I am thinking they will give Mayfair Witches at least one more season. A Call to Action from fans could certainly help to boost this show’s prospects.

Invincible (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This animated entry showed up in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the penultimate week of its third season, placing at the Number 8 slot with an estimated 419 million minutes of viewing. It has already been renewed for a fourth season, and Robert Kirkman has plans for this one to run for seven or eight years. That is a stretch for a streaming original, but I do expect that it will stick around for a while.
