Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
Status Updates
Agath All Along (Disney+, Status: Renewal Possible): Will this show get a second season or won’t it? According to series star Patti Lupone, showrunner Jac Schaffer told her that it would not continue into a second year because “she does one-offs”. But the show has been moved out of the Limited Series category for awards season, and Head of Marvel TV Brad Winderbaum has said that they want to do another season at some point: “Yes, a second season for sure is something that we would want to do, but let’s not rush it. Let’s get the right idea and then make it.” The show pulled in decent viewership according to the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and it was well-received by critics and viewers, so Marvel and Disney have a reason to want to move forward with a second season. Schaffer may not be involved, but the Mouse House has plenty of other talent to pull from, so I am moving this one away from Mini-Series status and to Renewal Possible.
Severance (Apple TV+, Status: Renewal Possible): This series was at the Number 5 slot in the Nielsen Streaming rankings for the second week of its second season, pulling in an estimated 622 million minutes of viewing. According to Apple TV+, it now counts as the Number 1 series in the streamer’s history based on unique views from January 17th through February 17th of this year, surpassing Ted Lasso. It has not received an official Season 3 renewal yet, but work has begun on that and I expect an announcement soon.
Percy Jackson and the Olympians (Disney+, Status: Renewed): A premiere date for Season 2 of this show has not been announced yet, but there are already talks of a possible third season. Rick Riordan announced on Blue Sky that a writer’s room has opened to “discuss potential plans for season three”. He did emphasize that there has not been an official renewal yet, but this is certainly a good sign. The first season performed very well in viewership, and this is a notable franchise for Disney+ apart from Star Wars and Marvel. So they may be looking at getting a jump on a third season to keep the ball rolling for this one.
The Ark (Syfy, Status: On the Bubble): The second season of this show wrapped up in October of 2024 and there has still been no word on its fate. However, series co-creator Dean Devlin did give some hope while he was attending the 52nd Saturn Awards in Los Angeles, California. When asked about the status of the third season by fans, he said “Stay tuned”, suggesting that an announcement was on the way. The show has not counted as a ratings hit across its first two seasons, but it has developed a following and it is one of only two active scripted entries on Syfy’s schedule along with SurrealEstate. Fans should definitely make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention and help convince the network to give it a third-season renewal.
