Streaming Sci Fi TV: Continuum, Farscape, The Librarians, and More Shows Are Currently Available for Free

Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest available on the streaming services.

There are quite a lot of streaming channels out there these days, including a number that are free, ad-supported services. And across those, you will find a notable selection of sci fi and fantasy shows. Here are ten entries of note from the past 25 years or so that you can stream right now.

Continuum (Original Run: 2012-15, 4 Seasons Totaling 42 Episodes): A law enforcement officer from 2077 goes back in time and must keep a terrorist group from her own era from changing the course of history.  This series gives us a notable genre entry that does a good job of handling time travel as well as its moral and ethical implications.  It is available for free on Prime Video (what used to be FreeVee) as well as The Roku Channel, The CW, and Pluto TV.

Farscape (Original Run: 1999-2004, 4 Seasons Totaling 88 Episodes + a Mini-Series): John Crichton is thrown across the cosmos by a wormhole and finds himself with a group of refugees aboard a living ship on the run from the totalitarian military group that controls that part of the galaxy. I count this one as an early prestige entry for sci fi TV, and it is certainly worth searching out. It is streaming for free on The Roku Channel and Crackle, and you can also find it on Prime Video, Peacock, and Fubo.  Note that the Peacekeeper Wars mini-series usually has its own separate entry on these services.

The Librarians (Original Run: 2014-18, 4 Seasons Totaling 42 Episodes): This fun fantasy-adventure series follows a group of extraordinary individuals recruited to protect the world’s mystical artifacts from falling into the wrong hands.  It carried on from the series of movies that starred Noah Wyle (and he made recurring appearances in the show), and a sequel series will be heading to TNT later this year.  It is streaming for free on The CW and Plex.

Dollhouse (Original Run: 2009-10, 2 Seasons Totaling 26 Episodes): This Joss Whedon entry focuses on a group of “Actives” in a secret organization that wipes and reprograms people’s minds to fulfill clients’ desires, from espionage to companionship. One of these “dolls”, Echo, begins to regain memories and question her reality, and she uncovers dark secrets about the Dollhouse and its far-reaching consequences.  Both seasons of this show are streaming for free on The CW’s website and app.

Ash vs. Evil Dead (Original Run: 2015-18, 3 Seasons Totaling 30 Episodes): This horror-comedy TV series catches up with Ash Williams, decades after his battles with the Deadites, as he is reluctantly pulled back into the fight when the Necronomicon unleashes a new wave of demonic terror. With the help of his loyal sidekicks, Pablo and Kelly, Ash embarks on a blood-soaked, chainsaw-wielding quest to stop the Evil Dead once and for all.  All three seasons are streaming for free on The Roku Channel, and this one is also available through the Starz streaming app.

Lost Girl (Original Run: 2010-15, 5 Seasons Totaling 77 Episodes): This supernatural drama follows a succubus who discovers she is part of the hidden Fae world and must navigate its politics while controlling her deadly powers. As she searches for her true origins, Bo chooses to live by her own rules, balancing relationships with humans and Fae while fighting to protect those she loves.  It is streaming for free on The CW’s website.

Mars (Original Run: 2016-18, 2 Seasons Totaling 13 Episodes): This unique hybrid sci-fi docudrama blends scripted storytelling with real-world science to depict humanity’s first attempt to colonize the Red Planet in 2033. Combining interviews with experts along with a fictional narrative, the series explores the challenges, risks, and triumphs of interplanetary exploration. The entire series is streaming for free on the Nat Geo website and app.  It is also available on Prime Video and Disney+.

The Dead Zone (Original Run: 2002-07, 6 Seasons Totaling 80 Episodes): This sci-fi drama is based on the Stephen King book of the same name and it follows Johnny Smith, a man who awakens from a six-year coma with the ability to see the past and future through touch. As he struggles to reintegrate into society, Johnny uses his newfound psychic powers to solve crimes, prevent disasters, and confront a terrifying vision of an impending apocalypse.  All six seasons are streaming for free on The Roku Channel, Pluto TV, and Plex.

The Dresden Files (Original Run: 2007, 1 Season Totaling 12 Episodes): This fun little supernatural detective series follows Harry Dresden, a Chicago-based wizard and private investigator who uses his magical abilities to solve bizarre crimes. As he battles dark forces, rogue sorcerers, and supernatural threats, he must balance his role as a protector of the innocent with the dangers of the mystical underworld. It is streaming for free on Prime Video, Fandango at Home, and Plex.

Moonlight (Original Run: 2007-08, 1 Season Totaling 16 Episodes): This supernatural crime drama follows Mick St. John, a vampire private investigator in Los Angeles who struggles with his undead nature while using his abilities to protect humans. As he navigates a complicated romance with reporter Beth Turner, Mick battles dangerous supernatural threats and uncovers secrets from his past.  It is streaming for free on Plex.
