Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings from 2/20/2025:
The Forgotten Realms (Netflix): This Dungeons & Dragons-based series was announced last week and it is now showing up in the Production Weekly listings. It will be based on the Forgotten Realms setting, but there is not much in the way of specifics beyond that at this point. Deadline had this to say about the series:
The proposed series will take place in the iconic campaign setting and centerpiece of the Dungeons & Dragons universe, a fantasy world released in 1987 that has become home to some of the brand’s most famous characters and launchpad for some of D&D’s most popular adventures.
Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) will be onboard as executive producer, and Drew Crevello (WeCrashed) will be writer-showrunner. This will obviously be an expensive series and will likely be in production for a while, so I would expect it to debut at some point in 2026.
Vought Rising (Prime Video): This prequel series to The Boys was announced last year and it is now moving into production. Jensen Ackles and Aya Cash will be starring in the series as Soldier Boy and Stormfront, and Eric Kripke along with showrunner Paul Grellong said the following about the show:
It’s a twisted murder mystery about the origins of Vought in the 1950s, the early exploits of Soldier Boy, and the diabolical maneuvers of a supe known to fans as Stormfront, who was then going by the name Clara Vought. We cannot wait to blow your minds and trouble your souls with this salacious, grisly saga drenched in blood and Compound V.
With work just beginning on this, there is a chance it could premiere by the end of 2025, but a 2026 bow is more likely.
Crystal Lake (Peacock): This Friday the 13th prequel series has been going through some shakeups since it was first announced in 2024, but it now appears to be set to move into production. Bryan Fuller (Hannibal) was originally set as showrunner, but he exited in May 2024 over creative differences. Brad Caleb Kane (who is also currently working on another horror prequel It: Welcome to Derry) came onboard in August and he will act as creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer. The specifics of the storyline have not been announced yet, nor have there been any casting picks at this point. And this is another one that will likely not debut until 2026.
Other genre entries from the current listings: The Creep Tapes Season 2 (Disney+), Lanterns (HBO), The Lord of the Ring: The Rings of Power Season 3 (Prime Video), Star City (Apple TV+), Testaments (Hulu)
