As expected, Amazon Prime Video’s fantasy series The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power has officially been renewed for a third season. The second season of that show spent seven weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and averaged 749 million minutes viewed per week during that time. And while that is down from its first season numbers, the show still counts as one of Prime Video’s most-watched streaming originals. Work had already begun on the third year and Amazon made a five-season 50-episode commitment to the property when they acquired the rights. The upcoming season will involve a time-jump according to the logline:
Jumping forward several years from the events of season 2, season 3 takes place at the height of the War of the Elves and Sauron, as the Dark Lord seeks to craft the One Ring that will give him the edge he needs to win the war and conquer all Middle-earth at last.
Showrunners J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay will continue to helm the series and Charlotte Brandstrom (The Witcher, The Man in the High Castle), Sanaa Hamri (The Wheel of Time), and Stefan Schwartz (The Boys, The Walking Dead) will be onboard as directors. Expect the third season to premiere at some point in 2026.
