Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
Status Updates
Paradise (Hulu, Status: Renewal Possible): This mystery box series was advertised as a thriller, but it does have strong sci fi elements. The premiere episode pulled in seven million views in streaming globally across nine days, according to Disney, and the company apparently considers that quite good since it does not usually share viewership numbers. That episode was also broadcast on ABC and pulled in a 0.14 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 1.4 million total viewers. That seems to have it off to a good start, and we will see what the numbers look like once the Nielsen Streaming Rankings catch up.
The Creep Tapes (Shudder, Status: Renewed): As expected, this horror entry has been renewed for a second season. According to AMC, the first episode of this spin-off from the Creep franchise drew record viewership when it debuted this last November. The second season already showed up in the Production Weekly listings a few weeks ago which suggested the renewal was coming, and that should have it on track to premiere around Halloween season.
The Rig (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): All six episodes of this show’s second season dropped on January 2nd with no notice, and not surprisingly it has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings yet. The show did make it into the Prime Video Top 10 for the week of its Season 2 premiere, but that was not enough to get it into the Nielsen charts. This one may have international funding keeping it afloat, and the cast is hopeful that the show will be back for a third year. But fans should certainly make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention.
Evil (Paramount+/Netflix, Status: Cancel): This supernatural drama is in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for a second week in a row after the third and fourth seasons became available on Netflix. It was at the Number 7 slot with an estimated 466 million minutes watched as it continues to find a new audience with its encore run on Netflix. Paramount+ cancelled the show after four seasons, though it did receive advance notice and four final episodes to wrap up its storylines. There has been no word of Netflix picking up the show for a fifth season, but if it continues to perform well in viewership that is a possibility. More on that at this link.
