Cancellation Watch: Agatha All Along Will Not Have Second Season According to Showrunner, Mayfair Witches Drops in the Ratings, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Agatha All Along (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): This WandaVision spin-off was planned as a mini-series, though there were talks of continuing it after viewership for the show was strong this past Fall. But according to series star Patti Lupone, showrunner Jac Schaffer told her that it would not continue into a second year because “she does one-offs”. Now apparently Marvel and Disney did want a second season of the show and a listing for it did show up previously in Production Weekly. That could just be a placeholder for a potential spin-off that would focus on the search for the Scarlet Witch’s son Tommy Maximoff, aka Speed. Or it is possible that the streaming service is still considering a second season for Agatha All Along. Ultimately, the corporate execs will make the final decision, and they could carry on the series without Jac Schaffer at the helm.

Mayfair Witches (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): This series saw its ratings drop with its latest episode, slipping to match its series low 0.02 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 215 million total viewers. Its numbers overall are down in its second season, but AMC seems to be all-in on its Immortal Universe shows, and this one may be making up slack with digital viewing. I still believe the show has a decent chance at a third-season renewal, however, I will continue to monitor its numbers closely over the coming weeks.

American Horror Stories (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): There has still been no word on a fourth season renewal for this horror anthology series, and it did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings this past Fall for the second half of its third season. But this show will eventually get lumped in with the parent series for the syndication package, so any money spent on new episodes will be recouped. Don’t be surprised if a fourth season of the show pops up sometime around Halloween.

The Creep Tapes (Shudder, Status: Renewal Possible): There has been no official word on a second season of this horror series yet, but as I mentioned in the most recent Sci Fi TV Production column, it did show up in the current listings. This one is certainly inexpensive to produce, and the Creep franchise has developed a notable following, so a second season does seem like a good bet at this point.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

I had not previously included the animated series Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man (which premieres today on Disney+) among the shows that I am tracking because I was thinking it was more of a kids’ show. But it looks like it is considered part of the MCU and it has already been renewed for a second season, so I have now added that to the tally. That brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2024-25 season to 18 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (40% of shows tracked) vs. 12 cancelled and ending (27%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 45
Cancelled 4 8.9%
Ending 8 17.8% 26.7%
Renewed 18 40.0%
On the Bubble 0 0.0%
Renewal Possible 15 33.3%
Mini-Series 4
