Sci Fi TV News of Note:
The animated sci fi series Pantheon was cancelled by AMC in 2023, and the completed second season was never aired in the United States because the network took a write-down on the show (more on that at this link). But Netflix picked this one up last year and started streaming the first season in November, and the second season will finally be available next month. That will start streaming on February 21st with all episodes available for viewing.
Amazon’s Prime Video has yet another fantasy entry in the works as they are developing a series based on Julie C. Dao’s books Rise of the Empress. Following is the description of the property from Deadline:
Rise of the Empress is described as “dark and mystical East Asian fantasy reimagining of The Evil Queen legend.” In it, a fantastical ancient Asian Empire is on the verge of destruction, torn apart by insidious rivalry. The only hope: a marriage between the handsome Heir to the Throne and a Princess from one of its feuding Kingdoms. As the competition to win the Prince’s hand heats up, chaos reigns when a dazzling peasant girl named Xifeng is thrown into the romance wars by a vengeful sorceress. In this fairytale of love and power, will Xifeng be able to save not only herself…but the whole Empire?
Crystal Liu (American Horror Story) and James Wong (The X-Files, Millennium) will be co-showrunners and Gemma Chan (Humans, Eternals) will be onboard as executive producer. This will likely be targeting a premiere in early to mid-2026.
Production has begun on HBO’s House of the Dragon Season 3 and Shudder’s The Creep Tapes Season 2 and you can read more about those at this link. In additional production news, Ulrich Thomsen has signed on to play Sinestro in DC’s Lanterns series which is heading to HBO. And Netflix has confirmed that Season 2 of One Piece (which is currently in the works) will premiere in 2025.
