Cancellation Watch: Star Wars Skeleton Crew Moves to Bubble Status, Castlevania Nocturne Enters the Netflix Top 10, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (Disney+, Status: On the Bubble): For a third straight week, this series has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings making it the least-watched Star Wars live-action television entry so far. Its future was already uncertain since Disney+ has been limiting the shows in this franchise to one season to keep costs down.  The showrunners do have plans for this one to continue, but with the low viewership this one has garnered so far, that is seeming less and less likely. I am moving the show to Bubble status and fans should certainly stage a Call to Action on the social networks to help it out.

Castlevania: Nocturne (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): The second season of this animated fantasy/horror series made it to the Number 10 slot of the Netflix Top 10 the week of its premiere, pulling in nine million hours of viewing across 2.3 million households. That was across four days since it premiered on Thursday, and the numbers could improve in its second week. Series director Samuel Deats made the comment on Twitter that “we’re going on hiatus until release and we find out if we’re getting renewed”, and also “if you want to see more shows of Castlevania quality, please support S2 when it releases”. If this one remains in the Top 10 for a few more weeks, that could get it a third season, and fans should certainly make some noise on the social networks to help it out.

Severance (Apple TV+, Status: Renewal Possible): This show just returned for its second season, so there are no viewership numbers available yet. But its first season was one of the most-watched originals on Apple TV+ and the second year has been getting high accolades so far. It has not received an official third-season renewal, but work has begun on that and Parrot Analytics has estimated that the show has made $200 million for the streaming service so far.  I would expect that this one will continue for at least another season or more.

Grotesquerie (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): There has been no word yet on Ryan Murphy’s latest horror series, but seeing as it ended on a cliffhanger, a second season of this one is certainly planned. The ratings for the show were not spectacular but might be considered acceptable for a basic cable entry these days. And the TCAs will be coming up shortly when the press meets with the Network execs, so we may hear word on this show’s fate at that time.
