Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.
Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings from 1/16/2025:
The Last of Us (HBO): We now have a premiere window of April 2025 for the second season of this post-apocalyptic series (over two years after the first season premiered), and work has begun on the third year as it is showing up on the most recent Production Weekly List. There has not been an official renewal announcement, but given the performance of the first season, I’m sure that HBO execs are optimistic about this show’s prospects. They appear ready to kick off the pre-production work, and if the viewership remains strong when the show returns for its second season, the network will likely make the renewal official. And getting things off to an early start for the third year will hopefully cut down on the gap between seasons.
School Spirits (Paramount+): This supernatural comedy is another show that has not received an official third season announcement, but work is already starting on that. The first season premiered in March 2023 on Paramount+ with little notice and the show did not place in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings. But then it had an encore run on Netflix and spent four weeks in that streamer’s Top 10. The second season is expected to premiere during the first half of 2025, and apparently they are trying to get a jump on the third season of this one as well. Expect to hear an official announcement on it soon.
Vision Quest (Disney+): Production is officially beginning on this MCU spin-off from Wandavision according to the latest Production Weekly report. Not much has been revealed about the storyline, but according to Deadline “it is believed to be centered on Vision as he tries to regain his memory and humanity”. Paul Bettany will be returning for the lead role and Faran Tahir will be reprising the role of Raza, leader of the terrorist organization the 10 Rings who tried to kill Tony Stark in Iron Man. James Spader will be back to voice Ultron and Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard) will be onboard as showrunner.
Daredevil: Born Again (Disney+): Season 2 of this show is on the list again, and apparently they are trying to get the jump on that so that there is not a large gap between seasons. The show (which continues from the cancelled Netflix series) is set to premiere March 4th, and the second season renewal was announced in advance.
