Streaming Sci Fi TV: Tracking down sci fi and fantasy shows of interest on the streaming services. Note that streaming availability can change with little to no notice.
Severance returns for its second season this week, and now is a good time to take a look at the sci fi TV offerings from the Apple TV+ streaming service. That one kicked off in November 2019 and it was pushing pretty hard on the genre shows from the start, launching with For All Mankind and See, and those were followed pretty quickly by Servant and the Amazing Stories revival. Since that time, the streamer has continued to roll out new sci fi and fantasy entries, many of which are highly respected in the genre. The service does not have much in the way of encore runs of older shows, but it is definitely leading the pack when it comes to quality originals. And you don’t have to be an Apple person who owns an iPhone or a Mac computer to get the channel. You can subscribe directly to Apple TV+ through Roku and other services, and it is also available as an add-on channel from Amazon.com.
Here are six notable sci fi TV shows currently streaming on the service that are worth checking out:
For All Mankind (5th Season Premieres in 2025): This alternate-history series helped to launch the channel, and it is on its way to becoming a sci fi TV classic. It takes place in a timeline when the Russians land on the Moon first, and the space race never ends because the United States and the Soviet Union continue to compete to take the lead in the exploration and colonization of the solar system. It mixes science fiction with social commentary, and it has an excellent cast to boot. It is headed into its fifth season which should premiere later this year and it could continue beyond that.
Severance (Season 2 Premieres January 17th): This corporate dystopia returns for its long (long) awaited second season this week with high anticipation. It focuses on a group of people working for a company who go through a procedure that completely separates their minds from the outside world when they go to work. But as they proceed through their mundane daily routine, they start to ask questions that could break down the barriers between the corporate world and the real world. The first season of this one has received many accolades, and the second season is getting strong reviews ahead of its premiere. And I expect that this one will stick around for a few more years.
Silo (Season 3 Premieres late 2025/early 2026): This post-apocalyptic series just wrapped up its second season, and the reviews for that have been quite good. It is based on books by Hugh Wooley and it focuses on the final ten thousand people alive on Earth who are living in a mile-deep home that protects them from the toxic and deadly world outside. Nobody knows the truth of why the silo was built and those who seek answers face deadly consequences. The show has been renewed through its fourth season which will be its last and will give it the chance to wrap up the story from the books.
Sugar (Season 2 Premieres in 2025): This series starts out as a murder mystery but delivers a twist about halfway through that reveals its sci fi roots. It follows Private Investigator John Sugar as he looks into the mysterious disappearance of a Hollywood mogul’s granddaughter. It is definitely a slow burn, but Colin Farrell’s performance in the lead role helps carry the show, and it is definitely worth checking out.
Foundation (Season 3 Premieres in 2025): This series takes on the insurmountable task of adapting Isaac Asimov’s epic Foundation books. The show follows a group of exiles as they set up an interstellar Foundation designed to save humanity and rebuild civilization amid the fall of the Galactic Empire. It also focuses on the actions of Brother Day (the middle-aged member of the Imperial Triumvirate) as he tries to hold onto power while the Empire crumbles. It takes plenty of liberties with the source material and appears to be a love-it-or-hate-it affair, but it does deliver some epic sci fi.
Mythic Quest (Season 4 Premieres January 29th): This workplace comedy is not really sci fi, but it will draw the interest of many genre fans. It looks in on the day-to-day lives of the people who work at a fictional video game studio that produces the popular MMORPG called Mythic Quest. It offers plenty of fun for geeks and gamers and has received quite a few accolades over its first three seasons.
