Sci Fi TV Production Report: Work Begins on Lanterns, Testaments, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds S4, and More

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.

Following are the genre entries of note included in the listings from 1/2/2025 and 1/9/2025:

Lanterns (HBO): This live-action series was originally announced in June of 2024, and production is now officially kicking off. It will be part of the DCU reboot spearheaded by James Gunn and Peter Safran and Chris Mundy (True Detective: Night Country, Ozark) will be onboard as showrunner with Damon Lindelof (Watchmen, The Leftovers) joining as executive producer. Following is the description of the show provided by Variety:

The series will follow Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two members of the Green Lantern Corps, an intergalactic team charged with defending a specific realm of the cosmos from evil through the use of rings that bestow an array of superhuman powers. Per the logline, new recruit Stewart and Lantern legend Jordan are “two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

Kyle Chandler (Godzilla: King of Monsters) has been cast as Hal Jordan after Josh Brolin stepped away from the role, and Aaron Pierre (Krypton) has been cast as John Stewart. Expect this one to premiere late 2025 or early 2026.

Testaments (Hulu): This sequel series to The Handmaid’s Tale was announced back in 2022, and it is now showing up in the January 2025 production listings. The Margaret Atwood book it is based on takes place fifteen years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale novel and follows three women–Aunt Lydia, Agnes, and Daisy–as they work together from different locations to bring down Gilead from within. The sixth and final season of The Handmaid’s Tale is scheduled to premiere in Spring of 2025 and will likely set things up for the sequel series. Expect Testaments to premiere at some point in 2026.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 (Paramount+): Work has begun on the last of the Nu Trek shows still standing (though the Starfleet Academy series is in the works) as Season 4 is showing up in the latest listings. Not much has been mentioned about the direction of the upcoming season, but we do know that it will consist of ten episodes like the last three. Expect this one to premiere late 2025 or early 2026.

Grimm Movie Reboot (Peacock): This reboot of NBC’s supernatural drama Grimm was just announced, and the movie is moving into production. There is very little information available on this one so far, but Josh Berman (Drop Dead Diva) will be writing the script and the original creative team will be onboard as well. My guess is that this will act as a continuation of the original series with new characters and might eventually launch an ongoing series on Peacock. But we will have to wait and see how this one plays out.

Other genre entries from the listings over the last two weeks: 3 Body Problem Season 2 (Netflix), Dark Matter Season 2 (Apple TV+), Dune: Prophecy Season 2 (HBO), From Season 4 (MGM+).
