Cancellation Watch: Star Wars Skeleton Crew Misses the Nielsen Rankings, Mayfair Witches Returns Down, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Star Wars: Skeleton Crew (Disney+, Status: Renewal Possible): This Star Wars entry has been showing up in the Disney+ Top 10, but that was not enough to get it to the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its premiere. The show released two episodes that week, but those drew less than the 382 million minutes the Number 10 entry on that chart had in the rankings. Disney+ has been leaning towards making its Star Wars and MCU entries limited series, but the showrunners for Skeleton Crew do have plans for a second season. I will see how this one tracks in the coming weeks, but if viewership does not improve, this may be yet another one-and-done entry in the franchise.

Mayfair Witches (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): This supernatural drama returned for its second season after a two-year break and saw a notable drop in its ratings. It managed only a 0.02 rating (two one-hundredths of a ratings point) based on same-day viewing in the 18-49 demographic with 249K total viewers. That is a 78% drop in the ratings score from its Season 1 average and over a 50% drop in total viewers. This one will make up some slack with digital viewing on AMC+, but the drop off in viewership has to be concerning to network execs. They are all-in on their Immortal Universe, though, with a third entry–Talamasca–arriving later this year and Interview with the Vampire already renewed for a third season. I will keep an eye on the numbers for Mayfair Witches in the coming weeks, but the show is definitely not off to a good start in its second year.

The Rig (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This eco-horror series returned for its second season last week with almost no notice. Amazon does not appear to be too interested in promoting this one, but the same was true for its first season. It may have international deals keeping it afloat and there is a chance that it can continue to a third year, but fans will want to make a Call to Action on the social networks to bring this one more attention.

Creature Commandos (Max, Status: Renewed): This animated DCU entry did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its premiere, but that is not uncommon for animated shows. It has been performing well for Max so far and a second-season renewal was announced in December.
