Dune: Prophecy Renewed for a Second Season by HBO

Coming as no surprise, the sci fi series Dune: Prophecy–which acts as a prequel to Denis Villeneuve-directed Dune movies–has been renewed for a second season. The show has performed well in viewership across all of HBO’s platforms (including the Max streaming service), and HBO’s Casey Bloys had already asked showrunner Allison Schapker to start working out storylines for a second year. The first season consists of six episodes with the finale to be released this Sunday, and the second season will likely have a similar episode count. Schapker commented on where the show will go next during the press conference announcing the renewal saying “how the sisterhood survives is very much a part of season 2”. Expect the show to return either late 2025 or early 2026.

This announcement brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2024-25 season to 16 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (42% of shows tracked) vs. 11 cancelled and and ending (29%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.

Dune: Prophecy is set 10,000 years before the birth of Paul Atreides, and it traces the origins of the fabled sect that will become known as the Bene Gesserit. The series stars Emily Watson, Olivia Williams, Travis Fimmel, Jodhi May, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, and Chloe Lea.
