Sci Fi TV Production Report: Neuromancer Moves into Development at Apple TV+, Warhammer 40K Ramps Up, and More

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into development/production based on the listings from Production Weekly. Note that appearing on that list does not guarantee that the series will move forward.

Following are the genre entries of note included in the listing from 12/12/2024:

Neuromancer (Apple TV+): William Gibson’s seminal cyberpunk novel has long been considered for a movie or television adaptation, and now that is going forward at Apple TV+ as announced earlier this year. A ten-episode series is planned to adapt the book, and there is no word at this time on whether the show could carry on beyond the source material into additional seasons. Following is the logline from the press release:

The series will follow a damaged, top-rung super-hacker named Case who is thrust into a web of digital espionage and high stakes crime with his partner Molly, a razor-girl assassin with mirrored eyes aiming to pull a heist on a corporate dynasty with untold secrets.

Graham Roland (Fringe, Lost) and J.D. Dillard (Devotion, The Outsider) will be helming the project with the former acting as showrunner and the latter directing the pilot. Neuromancer will be a co-production between Skydance Television and Anonymous Content, and Production Weekly has now listed it two weeks in a row as starting production. Expect this one to arrive late 2025 or early 2026.

Warhammer 40K(Amazon): It was announced earlier this week that a television series based on this game from Games Workshop was in the works and the project is now showing up in the Production Weekly list. Henry Cavill will be leading the series and the franchise is also set to expand into movies. No showrunner is set at this time as it is still in the early stages of development. But things should ramp up quickly on this one.

One Piece Season 3 (Netflix): The second season of this live-action adaptation of the popular Anime is currently in the works, and it appears that Netflix wants to get a jump on the third year of the show. There has not been an official Season 3 renewal announcement, but seeing as the freshman run of this show scored very well in viewership, the streamer will probably want to keep the show going for another year or so.

Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 (Disney+): The long-awaited return of Daredevil is set to premiere March 14th, and now Production Weekly is showing that season 2 of the show has started production. That does not come as a surprise because the streamer probably wants a quick turnaround on that so that there will not be as long of a wait between seasons. This will likely have the second year of the show on track to premiere in early 2026.

The Orville Season 4 (Hulu): This one is showing up on the list for a second week in a row which suggests that the fourth season is actually going forward. There still has not been an official renewal announcement, but I would expect to hear something soon. (I discussed this show in more detail in the previous week’s column).

Other genre entries from the current production listings: Harry Potter (HBO), The Testaments (The Handmaid’s Tale spin-off from Hulu).
