Cancellation Watch: La Brea Emerges in the Nielsen Top 10, The Ark Continues to Drift, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

La Brea (NBC/Netflix, Status: Ended): This prehistoric adventure series started streaming on Netflix last week and it showed up in that streamer’s Top 10 in the Number 3 slot, pulling in 35.6 million hours of viewing across 5 million households. The show ended after a three-season run on NBC, but it was actually cut short and had to wrap things up quickly with its final season. I’m not certain if there is any effort to bring this one back, but its appearance in the charts certainly gives it a boost and could lead to a revival similar to what Manifest experienced a few years ago if fans start making some noise on the social networks.

The Ark (Syfy, Status: On the Bubble): There has been no word on this show since it wrapped up its second season in October. The showrunners definitely have plans for this one to continue into a third year and beyond, but Syfy appears to be cutting back on its scripted programming of late. Fans should certainly make some noise in support of this show, otherwise it could turn into yet another genre entry cut short by that cable network.

Agatha All Along (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): This Wandavision spin-off remained in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings the week after its season finale, pulling in an estimated 287 million minutes of viewing. The show has been pegged as a mini-series, but viewership and reviews from critics have been good, and Production Weekly recently showed that work has begun on a second season. There has been no official renewal, though, and that could be a placeholder for a potential spin-off. Or, it is always possible that we could get another season of Agatha All Along at some point.

Teacup (Peacock, Status: Renewal Possible): This horror entry has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings so far, but that is not uncommon for originals on the Peacock service. Showrunner Ian McCulloch has indicated that he wants to continue the series into a second season, though this streamer has not been very good about supporting its own shows. Fans should certainly make some noise on the social networks to help give this one a boost.
