Sci Fi TV Production Report: The Orville Season 4 Could Be Moving Forward

Sci Fi TV Production Report: Tracking the sci fi and fantasy shows currently moving into production based on the listings from Production Weekly.

This is a new column that will be keeping an eye on the sci fi and fantasy shows that are showing up in the current listings from Production Weekly. When a TV show or movie appears on that list, it indicates that the project is in some stage of development or production. This provides industry professionals with essential details such as production status, filming locations, and key contacts. This information is important for networking, job searching, and planning sales campaigns within the entertainment industry.

However, these listings often include projects that are still in early development stages and may end up not going forward. Therefore, while a project may be listed, it doesn’t necessarily mean that all production details are finalized or that the project is actively hiring at that moment. So even if a show is on this list, it is not the same as an official greenlight announcement or renewal.  This is also not a list of all shows in production, just those that have been recently added.

Following are the genre entries included in the listing from 12/5/2024:

The Orville Season 4 (Hulu): There has been plenty of speculation about whether a fourth season of this show will happen, and this may indicate things are finally moving forward. Series creator Seth MacFarlane has continued to indicate that more seasons could happen, and co-star Scott Grimes recently claimed that production on a fourth season would start in 2025. The timing of Season 4 showing up in the list is right in line with that as they may be ramping things up to get the show going again. The bad news is that it will probably be no less than a year before that fourth season premieres, but at least things appear to be moving forward. I will be keeping an eye out for an official announcement from Disney and/or Hulu.

Agatha All Along Season 2 (Disney+): This Wandavision spin-off was originally planned as a mini-series, but viewership has been decent so far so perhaps the execs at Disney+ are reconsidering.  There are also talks of a spin-off that would focus on the search for the Scarlet Witch’s son Tommy Maximoff, aka Speed.  So perhaps this is a placeholder for that.

Alien: Earth Season 2 (FX): This long-awaited Alien television series from Noah Hawley is finally set to arrive in Spring 2025, and it looks like a second season is already in the works. I have not seen an official announcement, but they may want to get things ramped up so there is not much delay between seasons.

Harry Potter (HBO): Production work appears to have begun on the television adaptation of the J.K. Rawlings books, and there have already been some casting announcements. But there has also been a report that the premiere has been delayed from 2026 to 2027, so don’t start popping the popcorn for this show’s kick-off anytime soon.

Other genre entries from the current production listings: The Last of Us Season 2 (HBO), Neuromancer (Apple TV+), The Testaments (The Handmaid’s Tale spin-off from Hulu).

  1. Yes, please, more Orville! That show just keeps getting better and better in re-runs, like Futurama – it’s all about the subtleties.

  2. Please God, Seth McFarland and the entire cast crew of the Orville, please do as many seasons of this show as possible, as an old school treky I am in love with this continuation of the saga that is Star Trek and I’ve been dying for more rewatching the first three over and again…. please 🥺
