Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
Status Updates
Severance (Apple TV+, Status: Renewal Possible): The long-awaited second season of this show finally arrives at the beginning of 2025 (January 17th premiere), and executive producer Ben Stiller is giving some hope for a third season. In an interview with Collider, he mentioned that work has begun on that season even though there has been no official renewal announcement. Of course, Silo never had an official third-season renewal, but production on that is currently in progress. Seeing as Severance is one of the most popular originals on Apple TV+ and it has drawn a lot of positive buzz, it certainly makes sense that the streamer would keep it going. And I will keep an eye out for confirmation that production is moving forward.
Star Trek: Lower Decks (Paramount+, Status: Ending): This animated Trek entry did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its fifth season premiere, but that is not uncommon with Paramount+ originals. The show’s fifth season has been announced as its last, but there is some hope that it will continue beyond that, perhaps on a different platform. Fans are stumping for the show, and if it does make it into the rankings, perhaps that will give it a boost.
Ark: The Animated Series (Paramount+, Status: On the Bubble): There has been no word on when the remainder of the episodes for this show’s first season will be available for streaming. It premiered earlier in the year with almost no notice with the second half supposedly arriving by the end of 2024. But with just one month left, nothing is scheduled yet. It certainly seems like Paramount+ has little interest in pushing the series, so this show may end up as yet another one-and-done genre entry.
Cancellation/Renewal Score:
Word broke last week that the MGM+ sci fi/horror series From will be returning for a fourth year. That brings the score for the 2024-25 season to 14 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (40% of shows tracked) vs. 11 cancelled and ending (31%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
