Cancellation Watch: Dune Prophecy Has a Good Start for HBO, Arcane Holds Steady in the Netflix Top 10, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Dune: Prophecy (HBO, Status: Ending): The premiere episode of this Dune prequel series pulled in 1.2 million viewers across all platforms on Sunday according to HBO, and that improved to 2.1 million by Monday. Those numbers are about in line with the debut of The Penguin and have this one off to a good start. According to HBO’s Casey Bloys, he has asked showrunner Allison Schapker to start working out storylines for a second season, so if the numbers remain strong, this one could stick around for a while.

Arcane (Netflix, Status: Ending): This series held at the Number 2 slot in the Netflix Top 10, pulling in 29.6 million hours of viewing across 7.4 million households. The second season has been announced as the show’s last, but if the viewership remains strong, perhaps Netflix will reconsider that decision.

Star Wars: Visions (Disney+, Status: Renewed): A third season of this animated anthology was announced at the Disney APAC showcase held in Singapore. That will consist of nine short films from eight different Japanese anime studios, and it is set to premiere at some point in 2025.

Sanctuary: A Witch’s Tale (Sundance Now/AMC+, Status: Renewed): It did not get much attention from the mainstream entertainment media, but this supernatural drama has been renewed for a second season which will comprise six episodes.  It was allegedly Sundance Now’s biggest series debut ever, and the show will be returning at some point in 2025.
