Another Apple TV+ has been sent to the Network Executioner as the sci fi entry Sunny has been cancelled after one season. This has not been reported widely in the mainstream entertainment media, but the British site ScreenDaily.com (which is associated with Screen International) has announced the cancellation. The series is produced by A24 in Britain, and sources have confirmed that the show will not continue to a second season. This is yet another show that arrived on Apple TV+ with little in the way of promotion and it did not draw much of an audience. It did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during its first season run, and TelevisionStats.com currently shows it as only the 25th most popular show on that streaming service.
Apple TV+ has put out quite a number of sci fi and fantasy entries over the past few years, and they previously showed more support for their originals. But the post-Peak TV crunch has been taking its toll and the streamer has been going through some cost cutting lately (as have all of the television venues). This will mark the fifth Apple TV+ series from the 2023-24 season which has been cancelled after only one season joining The Changeling, Constellation, Strange Planet, and Time Bandits. The freshman entries from this past season that received renewals were Dark Matter, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Sugar. There were plans for Sunny to continue to a second season, so it is possible that the show could get shopped around. Fans should definitely make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention and help it potentially move to a new venue.
With this announcement, that brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the 2023-24 season to 33 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (42% of shows tracked) vs. 37 renewals (47%) with eight shows still awaiting word on their fate. You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.

It stars Rashida Jones, Hidetoshi Nishijima, Joanna Sotomura, Judy Ongg, and annie the clumsy and it is based on the 2018 novel The Dark Manual by Colin O’Sullivan.
