Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.
Sci Fi TV Premieres:
Arcane (Netflix): From the creators of League of Legends comes a new animated series, Arcane. Set in the utopian region of Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun, the story follows the origins of two iconic League champions-and the power that will tear them apart. All episodes of the second and final season will be available for streaming on Saturday.
Schedule Notes:
Wrapping up this week is HBO’s The Penguin which has its finale on Sunday. That one counts as a limited series, though viewership has been good so a second season is possible. Sci Fi TV News of Note:
Amazon has been working towards a revival of Stargate for a while, and some new developments suggest that could be moving forward. SciTrek has talked to several sources that suggest Amazon could be sending the project over to Sony because that company has more capacity to get it up and running. There is no indication at this point on whether that would be a movie or TV series or both, but Amazon has wanted to move forward with the franchise on both the big and small screens. You can watch the full video at this link, and stay tuned for further updates.
A Game of Thrones movie targeted at the big screen is currently in the works at Warner Bros. Discovery. There is no word at this point on what it will be about, but Hollywood Reporter speculates that it might pick up after the series ended seeing as most of the planned television spin-offs are prequels. There have been talks of a movie as far back as 2014, and showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss originally wanted to wrap up the series on the big screen. This is very early in the development stage at this point, so stay tuned for updates.
In cancellation news, the Apple TV+ sci fi entry Sunny will not be continuing to a second season. That one did not receive much promotion nor did it draw high viewership and it is yet another one-and-done entry from that streamer.
In production news, both Amazon’s Gen V and Peacock’s Twisted Metal have wrapped filming on their second seasons. That should put them on track to premiere at some point in 2025.
