Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
Status Updates
Silo (Apple TV+, Status: Renewed): The second season of this post-apocalyptic series is set to premiere in November, and it appears it will also be heading into a third season. There has been no official renewal announcement that I have seen, but filming has reportedly started on the third year of the show. Series star Rebecca Ferguson had previously talked about shooting the third and fourth seasons concurrently and that the show would wrap up after that. I have seen no confirmation of those plans, but this one has performed well for Apple TV+ and has received some pretty good buzz, so expect another season or two from it.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This fantasy entry slipped to Number 4 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the penultimate week of its second season, pulling in an estimated 733 million minutes of viewing. It is still one of Prime Video’s most-watched originals, and word is that they are sticking to the five-season and fifty-episode plan even though an official third-season renewal has not been announced yet.
Pluto (Netflix, Status: Ended): It has been over a year since this Anime series debuted on Netflix and there has still been no word on its fate. The show did adapt the full story from the Manga, so it appears that it was intended only for a limited run. I am counting this one as ended for now, though there is always the possibility that it could be revived at some point for a second season.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:
I had not factored in the fact that Arcane will be ending with its upcoming second season (which releases in November), so I have added that to the tally now along with the renewal for Silo. That brings the score for the 2024-25 season to twelve renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (46% of shows tracked) vs. eight cancelled and ending (31%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Do we suppose Apple is adapting all 3 books of the Silo trilogy then? Wool, Shift, and Dust? 3 seasons seems to make sense, I don’t know why they would feel the need to stretch it to a fourth though.
I heard that season three deviates from the books, with Hugh Howey’s approval. If so, perhaps that’s why there might be a fourth season. Just speculating.
Star/executive producer Rebecca Furguson has stated 4 seasons with Dust being broken into two seasons.
Season 1 was only half of book 1. So season 2 is the rest of book 1 still. So potentially season 3 would be book 2 and season 4 book 3.
