Cancellation Watch: Agatha All Along enters the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance Enters the Netflix Chart, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Agatha All Along (Disney+, Status: Mini-Series): This spin-off from Wandavision made it into the Nielsen Streaming rankings for the week of its premiere. It was at the Number 8 slot with an estimated 426 million minutes of viewing, which is pretty good considering it only had two episodes available to view at that point. This one has been designated as a limited series by Disney+, but if viewership is strong enough they could bring the cast back together for a second season.

The Penguin (HBO, Status: Mini-Series): This spin-off from The Batman hit a series high for one-night viewership, pulling in 1.8 million viewers across HBO and Max this past Sunday according to the premium cable channel. This show has performed quite well so far, but it is another one that has been designated as a limited series. There is always a chance it could come back for a second season, but Colin Farrell has indicated that he is unsure if he wants to return to the role of the Penguin.

Gundam: Requiem for Vengeance (Netflix, Status: Mini-Series): This Gundam spin-off had its debut last week on Netflix, and it made it into that streamer’s Top 10 at the Number 7 slot with 5.8 million hours viewed across 2.4 million households. Those numbers are decent for an animated entry, and it is possible that Netflix could consider turning this limited series into an ongoing show.

Hysteria! (Peacock, Status: Renewal Possible): This horror series had its debut last week and it will be a while before we see viewership numbers seeing as the Nielsen Streaming Rankings are running on a delay of over a month. But showrunner Matthew Scott Kane has indicated that he has at least four seasons planned for the series. Peacock has not been the best about supporting its originals, though, so fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to bring this one more attention.

Ghosts (CBS, Status: Renewal Possible): This supernatural comedy had a solid premiere for its fourth season, pulling a 0.45 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 5.5 million total viewers. It is in the syndication stretch at this point and the network will likely want at least one more season from this one in order to get it to an episode count that will ensure good sales for encore runs.

American Horror Story (FX, Status: Renewal Possible): There is still no word on when the thirteenth season of this show will arrive, but I would expect to see it in the next few months. And apparently Ryan Murphy has plans to keep it going beyond that. In an interview with The Wrap, Murphy said “I would keep doing it for a long time” and FX’s John Landgraf has said that he will “keep putting him on the air”. So this one could stick around for a few more years.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

At New York Comic Con this past weekend, renewals were announced for Rick & Morty (through its twelfth season) and Starfleet Academy (through its second season). We don’t know when the latter show will debut (possibly later in 2025), so I am not factoring that one into the score at this point. I did not previously have Rick & Morty factored in (it was already renewed through its tenth season), but I have added that now and it brings us to eleven renewed sci fi and fantasy entries for the 2024-25 season (52% of shows tracked) vs. seven cancelled and ending (33%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Show Count 21
Cancelled 4 19.0%
Ending 3 14.3% 33.3%
Renewed 11 52.4%
On the Bubble 0 0.0%
Renewal Possible 3 14.3%
Mini-Series 2
