Sugar Renewed for Second Season by Apple TV+

Fans of John Sugar have received some sweet news as Apple TV+ announced that the show has been renewed for a second season. That one did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings during its first season run, but word is that it performed well for an original on that service and it has been getting some good buzz.  Though, I had it as a Bubble show because the streamer had cancelled several of its freshman shows from the 2023-24 season.  It is likely not one of the more expensive productions from Apple TV+ and that may have helped its chances seeing as the streamer is trying to cut back on its costs. And while this one starts out as a noir detective series, it does throw a sci fi twist at the audience about mid-way through. Executive producers Audrey Chon and Simon Kinberg had the following to say about the renewal:

It has been incredibly exciting to see audiences around the world embrace Sugar, and we are thrilled to return for a second season. We’re so grateful to our partners at Apple for their support, our showrunner Sam Catlin, the brilliant Colin Farrell, and of course, our viewers. We can’t wait to get John Sugar back on the case.

According to Deadline, Season 2 of the series will find Sugar “back in Los Angeles taking on another missing person’s case, as he continues to look for answers surrounding his missing sister.” That will likely premiere later in 2025.

This is the first renewal announcement from the 2023-24 season in a while and the brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score to 38 renewed sci fi and fantasy entries (47% of shows tracked) vs. 29 cancelled and ending (37%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons on our Cancellation Watch Page.

Sugar follows Private Investigator John Sugar as he looks into the mysterious disappearance of a Hollywood mogul’s granddaughter. It stars Colin Farrell, Kirby, Amy Ryan, Dennis Boutsikaris, Nate Corddry, and James Cromwell.

We are now two months into the 2024-25 season, but there are still more shows from the prior year waiting for word on their fates, and I expect more announcements to come over the next month or so.
