Sci Fi TV Highlights: Premieres for TWD: Daryl Dixon, Grotesquerie, and More, Netflix Returns to Magic: The Gathering, and More

Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.

Sci Fi TV Premieres This Week:

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon (AMC): Titled “The Book of Carol”, the second season sees the return of Melissa McBride and follows the next chapter of Daryl and Carol’s friendship. Premieres Sunday 9 PM EST.

Grotesquerie (FX): A series of heinous crimes have unsettled a small community. “Detective Lois Tryon” feels these crimes are eerily personal, as if someone—or something—is taunting her. At home, Lois grapples with a strained relationship with her daughter, a husband in long-term hospital care and her own inner demons. With no leads and unsure of where to turn, she accepts the help of “Sister Megan,” a nun and journalist with the Catholic Guardian. Sister Megan, with her own difficult past, has seen the worst of humanity, yet she still believes in its capacity for good. Lois, on the other hand, fears the world is succumbing to evil. As Lois and Sister Megan string together clues, they find themselves ensnared in a sinister web that only seems to raise more questions than answers. Premieres Wednesday at 10 PM EST.

Schedule Notes:

Season 2 of FOX’s animated fantasy comedy Krapopolis will also premiere this week on Sunday at 9:30 PM EST, but for some reason, they have not released a trailer for that one yet. Sci Fi TV News of Note:

Netflix made quite a few announcements over the last few days for Geek Week leading off with a resumed attempt to launch an animated series based on Magic: The Gathering. The Russo Brothers (Avengers: Endgame) and Brandon Routh (The Legends of Tomorrow) were previously attached to that, but those plans have since been scrapped. Now, Terry Matalas (Star Trek: Picard) has come onboard as showrunner, and the series is ramping up again. There are currently no further details on the series beyond the fact that it will be based on the fantasy card-playing game.

That streamer also released a teaser for a new entry in the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners franchise, though it was sparse on detail beyond the comment “Return to Night City”. Stay tuned for more updates on that.

Production on Season 7 of Black Mirror has started and the guest cast has been revealed which includes Awkwafina, Milanka Brooks, Peter Capaldi, Emma Corrin, Patsy Ferran, Paul Giamatti, Lewis Gribben, Osy Ikhile, and Rashida Jones. That show is currently targeting a 2025 return.

Production has also begun on Season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender with Miya Cech coming onboard to play the earthbender Toph. That show is also looking to return at some point in 2025.

In scheduling news, Netflix has given Arcane Season 2 a premiere date of November 9th.  You can see a clip from the upcoming season of that show at this link.

Over at Syfy, that network’s upcoming series Revival–based on the comic of the same name–has set its main cast.  That includes Wynonna Earp star Melanie Scrofano along with Romy Weltman (Slasher), David James Elliott (JAG), and Andy McQueen (Mrs. Davis).  Following is the description of the series provided by Deadline:

On one miraculous day in rural Wisconsin, the recently deceased suddenly rise from their graves. But this is no zombie story as the “revived” appear and act just like they once were. When local Officer and single mother Dana Cypress is unexpectedly thrown into the center of a brutal murder mystery of her own, she’s left to make sense of the chaos amidst a town gripped by fear and confusion where everyone, alive or undead, is a suspect.

That show is currently targeting a 2025 premiere.

In cancellation news, Orphan Black: Echoes will not be continuing to a second season on AMC, and Apple TV+ has cancelled Time Bandits after one season.

Sci Fi TV Trailers:

The Sandman (Netflix): There is another world that waits for all of us when we close our eyes and sleep — a place called the Dreaming, where The Sandman, Master of Dreams (Tom Sturridge), gives shape to all of our deepest fears and fantasies. But when Dream is unexpectedly captured and held prisoner for a century, his absence sets off a series of events that will change both the dreaming and waking worlds forever. To restore order, Dream must journey across different worlds and timelines to mend the mistakes he’s made during his vast existence, revisiting old friends and foes, and meeting new entities — both cosmic and human — along the way. Premieres in 2025.
