Cancellation Watch: Kaos Premieres in the Netflix Top 10, Futurama Hits the Nielsen Rankings, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Kaos (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This fantasy dramedy entered the Netflix Top 10 at the Number 4 slot for the week of its premiere, pulling in 22.8 million hours viewed across 3.4 million households. That is a decent start, especially considering it covers only four days (the show had its bow on Thursday) and it received very little promotion. Creator Charlie Covell does have plans for additional seasons and he claims that Netflix has been supportive, so if the viewership remains good, this one could return for a second year.

Terminator Zero (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This animated continuation of the Terminator franchise premiered last week on Netflix, but did not make it into that streamer’s Top 10. That is not uncommon for animated entries, and TelevisionStats.com indicates that its popularity score (which tracks online engagement) has been good so far. There are plans for a second season of this one, so perhaps it will stick around for another year or so.

Futurama (Hulu, Status: Renewed): This show made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its Season 12 premiere, pulling in an estimated 320 million minutes of viewing. It has already been renewed through its fourteenth season, so it should stick around for a while.

The Changeling (Apple TV+, Status: Cancelled): It has been a year since this horror series premiered on Apple TV+ and there has been no word on its fate, so I am going to assume at this point that they quietly cancelled it. The creative team apparently had a two-season plan in place for the show, but it does not look like they will get to wrap it up. Perhaps it will return at some point, maybe on another venue, but that appears unlikely at this point.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:

Netflix announced last week that Dead Boy Detectives would not be coming back for a second season, and as mentioned above, I am counting The Changeling as done. That brings the current score to 25 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (32% of shows tracked) vs. 36 renewed (46%). Below are last season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
