Cancellation Watch: Evil Rises in the Rankings, Time Bandits Fails to Chart, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Evil (Paramount+, Status: Cancelled): This supernatural drama improved to Number 5 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of July 22nd with an estimated 406 million minutes of viewing. It has also been in the charts for eleven weeks since late April, bolstered by the encore run of Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix. Paramount+ decided to bring this one to an end after four seasons, but with viewership at these levels, it is possible they might reconsider that decision, especially if fans start making some noise on the social networks in support of the show.

Time Bandits (Apple TV+, Status: Renewal Possible): This fantasy entry did not make it into the Nielsen rankings for the week of its premiere, but that is not uncommon for Apple TV+ originals. It is currently showing to be the sixth most popular series on the streaming service according to TelevisionStats.com. And it has scored well with critics, currently holding an 80% Fresh Rating according to Rotten Tomatoes, though not so well with viewers as it only has a 49% Audience Score. There is still a chance that it could continue to a second season, though Apple TV+ has been cutting back on its spending for originals lately.

The Dragon Prince (Netflix, Status: Renewed): This show did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for its sixth season premiere, nor has it placed in the Nielsen Top 10 during its latest season. But it was already renewed through a seventh and final season and that will be premiering on December 19th.

Orphan Black: Echoes (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): This Orphan Black spin-off wrapped up its first season on AMC this past week, and creator Anna Fishko does have plans for the show to continue. It did get a fair amount of promotion in the U.S., but from the limited ratings data I saw, that did not help much with the linear viewership. If it made up some slack with digital viewing, perhaps it could continue for a second year, and fans could certainly help it out by making some noise on the social networks.
