Sci Fi TV Highlights: Premieres for The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power S2, Terminator Zero, and Kaos, Blake’s 7 Heads to Blu-ray, and More

Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.

Sci Fi TV Premieres This Week:

The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (Prime Video): Sauron has returned. Cast out by Galadriel, without army or ally, the rising Dark Lord must now rely on his own cunning to rebuild his strength and oversee the creation of the Rings of Power, which will allow him to bind all the peoples of Middle-earth to his sinister will. Building on Season 1’s epic scope and ambition, Season 2 of Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power plunges even its most beloved and vulnerable characters into a rising tide of darkness, challenging each to find their place in a world that is increasingly on the brink of calamity. Elves and dwarves, orcs and men, wizards and Harfoots… as friendships are strained and kingdoms begin to fracture, the forces of good will struggle ever more valiantly to hold on to what matters to them most of all… each other. The first three episodes will be available for viewing on Thursday.

Terminator Zero (Netflix): A warrior from a post-apocalyptic future travels to 1997 to protect an AI scientist being hunted by an unfeeling — and indestructible — cyborg. All episodes will be available for viewing on Thursday.

Kaos (Netflix): As discord reigns on Mount Olympus and almighty Zeus spirals into paranoia, three mortals are destined to reshape the future of humankind. All episodes will be available for viewing on Thursday.

Sci Fi TV News of Note:

The classic British sci fi series Blake’s 7 will be getting the Blu-ray treatment with updated special effects.  The first season of the show will be available from BBC Studios on November 11th and that will include interviews with the cast and a Making Of documentary.  It is unclear at this point on whether this will be a region-free Blu-ray set.

Seth MacFarlane’s Fuzzy Door production company is working with Universal International Studios on a television adaptation of Matt Dinniman‘s novel Dungeon Crawler Carl. Deadline gives the following description for the book:

The novel is set in a world where an alien invasion has wiped out most of humanity and survivors are forced to fight for their lives on a sadistic intergalactic game show. Coast Guard vet Carl finds himself paired with his ex-girlfriend’s stuck-up, tiara-wearing award-winning show cat Princess Donut the Queen Anne Chonk as they try to survive the end of the world, fighting monsters, aliens, an insane AI and even other survivors.

Chris Yost (Thor: Ragnarok, The Mandalorian) is attached as writer at this point, and there are currently six books in the series, so there is plenty of source material to pull from. No network or streaming service is attached yet, but the property should draw some interest.

A prequel origin series to Guillermo del Toro’s Kaiju film Pacific Rim is currently in the works at Legendary Entertainment.  Not many details are available at this point, but Eric Heisserer (Shadow and Bone, Bird Box) will be heading up the production.

According to SciTrek, MGM+ is demanding a Stargate series for their platform.  There have been rumors for a while that both a series and movie could be on the way, but nothing substantial has moved forward yet.  Now the people at MGM+ are getting impatient and want to go ahead with a series in the franchise.  You can see the full coverage at this link.

In cancellations and renewals, Disney+ has decided not to go forward with a second season of The Acolyte while The Librarians: The Next Chapter is moving from The CW to TNT and has received a second season pickup.

In scheduling news, Amazon’s adult-animate series Secret Level will have its premiere on Prime Video on December 10th. You can see the teaser for that below.

  1. It’s pretty telling about the state of modern storytelling that I’m more excited about the Blake’s 7 news than anything else. Maybe Secret Level will be good but I’m not into video games so it doesn’t have any emotional resonance for me.
