Cancellation Watch: The Boys Holds at Number 1 in the Nielsen Rankings, Hit Monkey Fails to Hit the Charts, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

The Boys (Prime Video, Status: Renewed): This superhero series held at Number 1 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for a second week in a row, pulling in its highest single-week viewership numbers of its fourth season with an estimated 1.3 billion minutes watched. The show has already been renewed for a fifth season, which will be its last. But the Gen V spin-off is currently active and more shows in this franchise are in development.

Hit Monkey (Hulu, Status: Renewal Possible): This animated Marvel entry did not make it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for the week of its Season 2 premiere. It has not received much promotion from Hulu and it is not directly tied to the MCU, so the show has not drawn much attention. Co-creator Josh Gordon claims that the second season ends with a “certain symmetry”, but that it also sets up the possibility for the show to continue. Fans should certainly stage a Call to Action for this one on the social networks to bring it some attention if they want it to stick around for a third season or more.

Kite Man: Hell Yeah! (Max, Status: Renewal Possible): This animated DC entry had its premiere on July 18th, and it did not place in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings (that chart is running further and further behind). Its parent series Harley Quinn has not had much chart presence either, and it is currently heading into its fifth season, so there is still hope for Kite Man. But fans should probably make some noise for this one on the social networks to help its prospects.

Strange Planet (Apple TV+, Status: Cancelled): It has been over a year since this animated sci fi comedy premiered and there has been no word on its fate. It never garnered much attention during its streaming run, and I am going to assume at this point that it has been quietly cancelled. Series creator Nathan Pyle had indicated that he would like the show to carry on for additional seasons, but it does not appear that Apple TV+ will keep it going. Perhaps it could return at some point, possibly on a different venue, but I am counting it as one-and-done for now.

Also, I have now factored Strange Planet into the tally which brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score to 23 cancelled and ending (29% of shows tracked) vs. 36 renewed (46%). Below are last season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score for the current and prior seasons throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
