Cancellation Watch: The Acolyte Enters the Nielsen Rankings, Star Trek: Prodigy Falls Short of the Netflix Charts, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

The Acolyte (Disney+, Status: Renewal Possible): The latest Star Wars entry from Disney+ entered the Nielsen Streaming Rankings at Number 7 for the week of its premiere. It pulled in an estimated 488 million minutes of viewing which is impressive with just the two episodes available for viewing that week. There have been doubts about whether this one will continue to a second season because of its high production costs, but if the viewership remains strong, it may stick around.

Star Trek: Prodigy (Netflix, Status: Cancelled): This animated Trek series had its Season 2 premiere on Netflix last week, but did not make it into the streamer’s Top 10. The show was cancelled by Paramount+ after one season and removed from streaming, but the completed second season was picked up by Netflix. Many fans hoped this could lead to a continuation of the series on that service, but the early indications are that it has not drawn much of an audience there. Fans should certainly continue their Call to Action on the social networks (and vote for the show in our poll) and convince as many people as possible to watch it on Netflix to keep hopes of a third season alive.

Supacell (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This British superhero series improved to Number 1 in the Netflix Top 10 for its second week, pulling in an impressive 61.2 million hours watched across 11.8 million accounts. In addition to that, it currently holds a 100% Fresh Rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 77% Audience Score. There has been no word on a second season yet, but its chances look good at this point.

Scavengers Reign (Netflix/Max, Status: Cancelled): This is another cancelled animated entry that was picked up by Netflix and there were hopes that the streamer would keep it going for a second season. But after over a month on the service, it has not charted in the Netflix Top 10 or the Nielsen Streaming Rankings and it appears that the one season is all we will get from this series.
