Outer Range Has Been Cancelled by Amazon After Two Seasons

The Prime Video original Outer Range will not be continuing to a third season as Amazon has announced its cancellation. The news comes as somewhat of a surprise as the show has performed quite well in viewership over its two seasons. In its first year, the show spent five weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings Top 10, averaging an estimated 345 million minutes viewed per week. In its current season, it has spent three weeks in the charts so far, averaging over 400 minutes per week, and overall it has preformed well for a Prime Video original. It has also received decent marks from critics and viewers, currently holding an 85% Fresh Rating and 73% Audience Score across its two seasons on Rotten Tomatoes. Series star Josh Brolin recently expressed an interest in seeing it continue to a third season saying:

I think it would be intriguing, which I can’t believe me saying because I don’t want to stay with anything too long, but this series just as an idea and as an experience has gotten more intriguing the further we’ve gone with it, so I think that Season 3 would be amazing.

Amazon has not given a reason for cancelling the show, but perhaps they are monitoring the completion rate like Netflix does which tracks how many people watched the entire current season within a set amount of time.  Based on viewership, it seems like that should still be sufficient to justify a third season, but the streamer does not publish those stats.  There is no word at this point on whether the property will be shopped around, but fans should definitely stage a Call to Action on the social networks if they want to see the show continue.

This announcement brings the Cancellation/Renewal Score for the current season to 18 cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy entries (26% of shows tracked) vs. 29 renewed (41%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons at our Cancellation Watch Page.

Outer Range focuses on rancher Royal Abbott who discovers a mysterious black void on his property. At the same time, a female drifter arrives who has a connection to the ranch and Royal is also dealing with a rivalry with a neighboring family. It stars Josh Brolin, Imogen Poots, Lili Taylor, Tom Pelphrey, Tamara Podemski, and Lewis Pullman.

We are almost at the end of the 2023-24 season and I expect more announcements to come over the next month or so. You can see the status of all this season’s shows at this link. And be sure to follow this site and the Cancelled Sci Fi Twitter Site for updates and breaking news.

  1. Why am i not surprised…another interesting and unique sci-fi show gets cancelled while perverse derivative garbage like ‘the boys’ gets five seasons. Just sickening really.
