Cancellation Watch: Supacell Charges Up the Netflix Top 10, Evil Holds in the Nielsen Rankings, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Supacell (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This British-made superhero series landed in the Netflix Top 10 at the Number 2 slot for the week of its premiere. It pulled in 33.5 million hours of viewing across 6.4 million accounts, an impressive debut considering it is a mostly unknown property. If these viewing numbers continue, this one could be on track for a second season.

Evil (Paramount+/Netflix, Status: Cancelled): This supernatural drama has now spent four straight weeks at Number 2 in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, and it jumped to its highest viewership yet in its fourth week at an estimated 826 million minutes watched. The show has been cancelled by Paramount+ and its current season is its last, but these viewing numbers (which include the encore run of Seasons 1 and 2 on Netflix), suggest that the show has a pretty large audience. Fans should certainly take this as an opportunity to stage a Call to Action on the social networks and possibly keep it going into a fifth season.

Star Trek: Prodigy (Netflix, Status: Cancelled): This animated Trek entry was cancelled by Paramount+, but Netflix picked up the completed second season and that is now available for viewing at that service. That streamer has not committed to a third season, but co-executive producer Aaron J. Waltke has said that there is still a chance for that or possibly a movie. This is another one that fans should be supporting by making some noise on the social networks to get it to continue beyond its second season.

Skull Island (Netflix, Status: Cancelled): It has been over a year since the premiere of this animated MonsterVerse entry, and there has still been no word on its fate, so I am going to count it as cancelled. Showrunner Brian Duffield previously indicated that scripts have been written for the second season of the show and some initial recording has occurred, but by this point, I am guessing that the contracts for the cast and crew have expired and that the show will not continue at Netflix. There is still a chance it could return for a second season down the road (perhaps jumping over to Apple TV+ to pair up with fellow MonsterVerse series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters), but for now I am considering it one-and-done.
