Cancellation Watch: Outer Range Rises in the Charts, Scavengers Reign Could Be Over, and More

Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.

Status Updates

Outer Range (Prime Video, Status: Renewal Possible): This sci fi/western entered the charts at Number 5 for its Season 2 premiere week with an estimated 431 million minutes of viewing and then improved for its second weed to Number 3 with 476 million minutes. Those are good numbers for a Prime Video entry, and at this point the show’s prospects for a third-season renewal are looking good.

Scavengers Reign (Max/Netflix, Status: Cancelled): There have been four weeks of Netflix Top 10 chart activity since this show moved over to that streamer for an encore run, and it has not placed in those rankings. Max cancelled the animated sci fi series after one season, but Netflix was keeping open the possibility for a second season. But seeing as the show has not charted, that certainly seems unlikely at this point. Fans can vote for this one in our Summer poll to improve its chances of continuing to a second year.

Dark Matter (Apple TV+, Status: Renewal Possible): This sci fi entry has not made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings so far, though it currently has mostly positive feedback, holding an 81% Fresh Rating and 82% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes. Series creator Blake Crouch has indicated that he has ideas for a second season in an AMA he did on Reddit, though he has also suggested that the first season told the full story that he had planned. Still, Apple TV+ has been supportive of its shows, and fans may want to make some noise on the social networks in support of this show if they want it to continue.

Dead Boy Detectives (Netflix, Status: Renewal Possible): This supernatural drama spent three weeks in Netflix’s Top 10 and two weeks in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings. Its chart numbers looked decent, but it dropped out quickly suggesting it may not have the completion rate that Netflix execs are looking for. The showrunner does have plans for a second season of this one, and its link to The Sandman could help keep it going, but fans should definitely give it some support on the social networks to improve its chances.

Orpan Black: Echoes (AMC, Status: Renewal Possible): There are no viewing numbers for this show’s premiere on AMC yet because Nielsen is currently running pretty far behind. The network has been giving this one plenty of promotion, so they seem to want it to continue. But the first season aired in Australia in Fall 2023 and it is unclear if the cast and crew are still under contract to return for a second year. The numbers on AMC will be important, and I will be keeping an eye on how this one tracks in the coming weeks.

  1. I love this show. It all makes sense to me but I’ve been on the “time is a circle while yet being on simultaneous timelines” train for a while. LOL

  2. Something about this show is just addictive.
It makes no sense, it has hard story lines, confusing characters, senseless time adjustments, characters overflow and firmly step on the others toes…it is absolutely fabulous!
