Sci Fi TV Highlights: A look at the upcoming schedule of sci fi and fantasy shows as well as recent news and/or trailers of note.
Sci Fi TV Premieres This Week:
Star Trek: Discovery (Paramount+): The fifth and final season will find Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery uncovering a mystery that will send them on an epic adventure across the galaxy to find an ancient power whose very existence has been deliberately hidden for centuries. But there are others on the hunt as well… dangerous foes who are desperate to claim the prize for themselves and will stop at nothing to get it. Season 5 premieres on Thursday
American Horror Story (FX): In American Horror Story: Delicate, after multiple failed attempts of IVF, actress Anna Victoria Alcott wants nothing more than to start a family. As the buzz around her recent film grows, she fears that something may be targeting her – and her pursuit of motherhood. Season 12, Part 2 premieres Wednesday at 10 PM EST.
Schedule Notes:
Also premièring this week is Season 2 of Beacon 23 on MGM+. The first episode will drop on Sunday. Wrapping up this week is Syfy’s Resident Alien which has its Season 3 finale on Wednesday. There has been no word of a fourth season of that show yet. Also wrapping up is Amazon’s Invincible which drops its Season 2 finale on Thursday. That one has been renewed for a third season. Constellation wrapped up its first season on Apple TV+ last week and there is no word on a second season at this point. Sci Fi TV News of Note:
SciTrek has been talking to an anonymous source at MGM and they have confirmed that the new Stargate TV series which is in the works will not be a reboot of the property. Not much additional information is available at this point, but the show will exist in the same continuity as the other live-action entries in the franchise. MGM+ has given the greenlight to a limited-series adaptation of of the sci fi novel Earth Abides by George R. Stewart. Deadline gives the following description for the project:
When a plague of unprecedented virulence sweeps the globe, the human race is all but wiped out. In the aftermath, as the great machine of civilization slowly and inexorably breaks down, only a few shattered survivors remain to struggle against the slide into extinction.
Ish is a brilliant but solitary young geologist living a semi-isolated life who awakens from a coma only to find that there is no one left alive but him. A plague of unprecedented virulence has swept the globe, and yes, there are a few scattered survivors, but there are no rules.
Alexander Ludwig (Vikings, The Hunger Games) has been cast in the role of Ish, and filming will start in April with a targeted premiere date of late 2024.
Amazon MGM Studios is adapting several popular podcasts including The Prophecy and Daniel X: Genesis. The former is a a supernatural thriller and the latter follows a teenager who learns he has special abilities. Both will be adapted into one-hour live-action dramas.
In production news, Ben Stiller has said that filming on the long-delayed second season of Severance could wrap up next month and that “it will be coming out sometime after that soon”.
In scheduling news, AMC has announced June 23rd as the premiere date for Orphan Black: Echoes. You can see the trailer for that below. In addition, the second season of Amazon’s season-long horror anthology Them–subtitled The Scare–has received a premiere date of April 25th.
In casting news, troubled actor Ezra Miller has been replaced by Eric Bauza in the role of D.A. Sinclair in Amazon’s animated series Invincible. There was no advance announcement for this, but the character appeared in the latest episode of the series voiced by Bauza.
