Sci Fi TV News:
The Television Critics Association winter press tour has been going on and has led to quite a bit of sci fi TV news this past week. Following are the highlights:
Arrow-verse co-creator Marc Guggenheim has indicated an interest in doing a sequel series to Superman Returns which starred Brandon Routh as the Man of Steel. In a series of tweets he indicated that he has talked to Routh about the show and they have some “really exciting ideas”. Of course, nothing is officially in the works right now and The CW is getting out of the superhero business once the final season of Superman & Lois airs while Max is mostly following the newly rebooted timeline for the DC Universe that James Gunn and Peter Safran are working on. S&L was cancelled by The CW due to the reboot and the upcoming Superman: Legacy film, so it seems unlikely that another Superman continuum would run concurrently with that. But you never know and we will have to see what comes from this.
A reboot of the classic supernatural sitcom Bewitched is in the works at Sony TV with Judalina Neira (The Boys) writing and executive producing. It is being described as an “irreverent hourlong reimagination of the classic TV series” about a witch living a normal suburban life while trying to hide her magical abilities. No star is attached at this point nor has a network been named, but this one should draw some interest.
James Wan (The Conjuring, M3GAN) is working on a currently untitled techno-thriller at Peacock that will star Simu Liu (Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings). Deadline gives following description for the project:
[The series] is set five minutes in the future when first-generation American intelligence analyst Alexander Hale realizes his brain has been hacked, giving the perpetrators access to everything he sees and hears. Caught between his shadowy agency and the unknown hackers, he must maintain a performance 24/7 to flush out who’s responsible and prove where his allegiance lies.
Thomas Brandon (Legacies) created the series and will serve as writer and executive producer. The streamer will likely be targeting a 2025 release if they give it the greenlight.
In renewals from the past week, SurrealEstate has been picked up for a third season by Syfy, Invasion will continue for a third year on Apple TV+, and Hulu has given the greenlight for a fourth season of American Horror Stories. Coming to an end is Paramount+’s Evil which will wrap up after its upcoming fourth season which premiere in May.
