MGM+ confirmed yesterday that the sci fi series Beacon 23 will continue for a second season on that service. The first season wrapped up on Sunday night with a double episode (I had previously indicated in the schedule that the finale was on December 24th) and the network ran a teaser for the upcoming second year of the show. This series was originally intended as a Spectrum Original with AMC also involved in the project, but both of those venues decided not to go forward with it opening the door for MGM+ (previously Epix) to pick up the show. Both the first and second season had been completed at the time that Beacon 23 premiered, but there was not an official confirmation that MGM+ would air the second cycle. That is set now, though there is no word on whether the show could continue beyond that point. Showrunner Glen Mazzara (The Walking Dead) had the following to say about the upcoming season:
Beacon 23’s season two ups the game: more action, more mysteries, more twists and exciting new characters. It’s a thrill ride. I can’t wait for the audience to see it.
Since the second season has already been completed (except for maybe some post-production work), expect a pretty quick turnaround on this one with maybe a Spring or Summer release. The first episode of the series is available to stream for free on Amazon’s Prime Video.
I already had Beacon 23 flagged as renewed, so the Cancellation Watch Score for the current season remains the same. Twelve sci fi and fantasy entries have been renewed so far this year (33% of shows tracked) vs. five cancelled and ending (14%). You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current season at our Cancellation Watch Page.
Beacon 23 follows two people trapped on a space lighthouse known as a “beacon” which is located at the end of the known universe. Each must determine the other’s motives and whether they can trust them as the situation on the malfunctioning station grows increasingly more tense. It stars Lena Headey, Stephan James, Marnie McPhail, Daniel Malik, and Carolina Bartczak and is based on the book of the same name by Hugh Howey.
