Peacock will continue to keep things twisted for at least another year as its post-apocalyptic comedy Twisted Metal has been renewed for a second season. That video game-based show made it into the Nielsen Streaming Rankings for one week and was the streamer’s most-binged original during its premiere week according to Peacock. Showrunner Michael Jonathan Smith made the following comment about the renewal:
I have to give a Sweet Tooth-sized thank you to our incredible fans – I read every comment and was so blown away by everyone’s love, support, and rabid enthusiasm for a paper bag. We are beyond thankful we get to continue the story of John Doe, Quiet, and Sweet Tooth as they face off against familiar faces and new grim foes in the long-awaited Twisted Metal tournament. The mixtape is made, and I’m thrilled to get back on the road with our stellar cast and crew.
Sweet Tooth is referring to the menacing clown character from the show and is not to be confused with the Netflix fantasy series of the same name. Twisted Metal is actually the first sci fi/fantasy original from Peacock that has received a second season renewal as that service has not been particularly good at supporting its originals. (Wolf Like Me, which has had two seasons so far, is an Australian acquisition.) The show will likely be targeting a late 2024 or early 2025 return for its second year.
Twisted Metal premiered at the tail end of the 2022-23 season, so its renewal gets counted in the Cancellation/Renewal Score for that year. It evens up the numbers for that season, bringing the renewals of sci fi/fantasy entries to 43 (48% of shows tracked) vs 43 cancelled and ending shows (48%). There are still four shows from that season awaiting word on their fates. You can see the breakdown of the numbers and the full list of shows for the current and prior seasons at our Cancellation Watch Page.
Twisted Metal follows John Doe, a motor-mouthed outsider who must deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland — if he can survive the drive. It stars Anthony Mackie, Stephanie Beatriz, Joe Seanoa, Will Arnett, and Thomas Haden Church and it is based on the video game series of the same name. It was developed by Zombieland‘s Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick.
