Cancellation Watch: Status updates for the sci fi and fantasy shows on the broadcast networks, cable channels, and streaming services as well as breaking news on the currently airing, returning, and upcoming genre entries.
Status Updates
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (Netflix, Streaming 1st Season, Renewal Possible): The animated continuation of Scott Pilgrim had its debut last week on Netflix but did not make it into the streamer’s Top 10 for the week. It premiered on a Friday meaning only three days worth of viewership would have been picked up, but it did not draw enough eyes to make it into the charts. That does not doom the show, and animated entries tend to have lower viewership, but I am sure Netflix execs would like to see this one spend some time in the Top 10. I will see how it tracks in the coming weeks before moving it to Bubble status, and fans may want to make some noise on the social networks to bring it more attention.
Fear the Walking Dead (AMC, Completed 8th Season, Ended): The two-hour series finale for this show pulled a 0.07 rating based on same-day viewing for the 18-49 demographic with 440K total viewers which is near a series low. Overall, the second half of the eighth season pulled slightly more viewers than the first, but this one has been on a mostly downward trajectory for quite a while. There have been some suggestions of spin-offs from Fear the Walking Dead, but based on this viewership it seems unlikely they will happen.
The Power (Amazon, Completed 1st Season, On the Bubble): With the actors’ strike resolved, there is currently a rush to get shows back into production but there has been no word on this one yet. It has not received a renewal notice, and schedules will get crowded with other shows ramping up so there is a chance it could get lost in the mix. Amazon just cancelled three other originals and it is possible that more could follow. Fans will certainly want to make some noise on the social networks to help this show’s chances of returning for a second season.
Hello Tomorrow! (Apple TV+, Completed 1st Season, On the Bubble): This is another show from last season still awaiting word on its fate, and another one that could find itself edged off the schedule. It did not chart in the Nielsen Streaming Rankings, nor did it score well with critics (currently holding only a 54% Tomatometer Score on Rotten Tomatoes). Its status remains uncertain and fans will want to stage a Call to Action if they have any hope for a second season.

Cancellation/Renewal Score:
Netflix has announced a seventh season renewal for Black Mirror, but that one counts back on the 2022-23 season. NBC’s La Brea is confirmed to be ending with its upcoming third year, so that will be factored into the 2023-24 season numbers bringing us to five cancelled and ending sci fi and fantasy shows (14% of shows tracked) vs. twelve renewed (33%). Below are this season’s numbers, and you can see the list of shows and keep up with the score throughout the week at our Cancellation Watch Page.
